American Public Media is the largest station-based public radio organization in the U.S., combining multi-regional station operations, national content creation and distribution in one organization. Its multi-regional station operations include 49 public radio stations and 42 translators in the Upper Midwest and California.

Organizational Structure

American Public Media is the name used for the group of nonprofit organizations and is also the name of the national program production and distribution efforts of American Public Media Group, the name of the nonprofit parent organization. It is the support organization for several tax-exempt nonprofit organizations.

American Public Media Group

APMG is a tax-exempt nonprofit parent support organization that provides administrative, financial, and human resources services to its supported organizations and divisions, American Public Media, Minnesota Public Radio, and Southern California Public Radio. APMG operates Public Radio Market under license from American Public Media.

The mission of American Public Media Group is to provide significant long-term financial strength to its supported organizations.

Minnesota Public Radio

Minnesota Public Radio® is a tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that produces and acquires radio programming of community value, combines these programs into a nonprofit radio service of the highest quality for broadcast through a network of radio stations to the people of Minnesota and the upper Midwest, and reflects the culture, events, issues and ideas of the region’s people in radio broadcasts designed for national and international audiences.

MPR is a subsidiary of APMG, in that a majority of the Trustees on the Board of MPR are elected by or approved by the APMG Board, all of whom also serve on the MPR Board.

Southern California Public Radio

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that produces and acquires programming of community value and combines these programs into a nonprofit radio service of the highest quality for broadcast to the people of Southern California and the nation, including the production and broadcast of local, West Coast and Pacific Rim news and information programming.

SCPR operates KPCC 89.3 FM in Los Angeles and Orange County, KUOR 89.1 FM in the Inland Empire, KJAI 89.5 in Ventura County, and 90.3 KVLA FM in the Coachella Valley pursuant to Public Service Operating Agreements with Pasadena City College and the University of Redlands and streams its program service worldwide on its Web site.

SCPR is a subsidiary of APMG, in that the Trustees on the Board of SCPR are appointed by the APMG Board upon recommendation of the SCPR Board. At least 75 percent of such Trustees must be residents of Southern California.


History

Founded in 1967, Minnesota Public Radio began as a single classical music radio station at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. Since then, Minnesota Public Radio has grown into a 45-station network serving virtually all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states with three radio services: MPR News, Classical MPR and The Current. Founded in 2004, American Public Media has grown into one of the largest producers of public radio programming in the world.
