Glen Nelson Center Announces Winners of Fifth Annual Next Challenge for Media & Journalism

National awards celebration held at Media Impact Forum at KQED in San Francisco honored five winners across six award categories with a total of $200,000 in grants.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 1, 2026 — Glen Nelson Center at American Public Media Group last week unveiled the winners of the fifth annual Next Challenge for Media and Journalism National Awards Celebration at the Media Impact Forum at KQED in San Francisco. The ceremony brought together journalists, funders, technologists, and founders to recognize the most innovative startups reinventing local news across the United States.

Almost 400 media startups began the application process for the 2026 Next Challenge, from which 16 finalists were selected, and five winning companies received cash awards totaling $200,000.

David Brancaccio, Marketplace’s “future effects” senior correspondent and former host of Marketplace Morning Report, served as emcee for the awards celebration.

"As we enter the fifth year of the Next Challenge, the urgency of this work has never been more apparent,” said Jeff Freeland Nelson, executive director of Glen Nelson Center. “The founders we recognized are not waiting for someone else to solve the local news crisis. They are building the solutions themselves. This competition exists to find them, support them, and put them in front of the people who can help them grow.”
